OUP Book Blog

Another contribution to another blog: follow this link to a piece I wrote for the OUP Blog, on Adam Foulds' Quickening Maze and Tennyson. My friend Doug Cowie knows Foulds a little bit, and says he's the nicest man imaginable. He's certainly a very gifted writer. On reflection I now consider this punkadiddle review of his novel too negative.

It's too negative now, just because he is a nice guy? Have I misread the sarcasm or did you just slip into "my friend's and my friend's friend's books are superior to the ordinary book" mode?

    Just sayin'.

I don't know him, have never met him, have no knowledge or opinion on his niceness or otherwise. What I meant (what I didn't put across very well) is that re-reading the novel to write this OUP post made me think rather more highly of it than I did before.

Fair enough. Just the way it came across the first time, sounded as if you felt bad that the original review was too negative after your friend mentioned that he was a nice guy.

Knowing your review style, I did not seriously imagine what I initally implied was the actual situation. Only checking!

I do take your point, Tim.
