Dan: absolutely. Having read both halves of your piece now I think I understand, and completely respect, your position.

I think I'll edit out that last paragraph. I really do get sucked down a pernickerty-pedantic whirlpool, there. Let the record show that this post originally etc etc.

Fair cop, guv. In interrogating Valente's position (and, after all, I'm basically saying that even had Skvorecky done what he in fact did not, it wouldn't have been an issue for me), I did, well, take her word for it. D'oh.

While we're nit-picking, though, I'd emphasise that I don't dislike the novel - far, far from it. (In the piece, I write, "it is undoubtedly one of the finest novels written within the field, and probably outside of it, last year." Which is fairly unambiguous.) It's simply that, reading the novel in context with the others, and therefore in the spirit of comparative competition which an award encourages, some stuff occurred to me.

Anyway, regardless: the best of luck tonight, sir.
